Shockwave therapy is an advanced acoustic wave treatment utilized to address long-standing tendon pain in various parts of the body, including the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, heel, and the sole of the foot. At M.R. Therapies in Dundalk, our radial shockwave machine delivers mechanical, not electrical, waves to effectively reduce pain, facilitating quicker recovery.
How Shockwave Therapy Works
Shockwave therapy works by providing immediate pain relief, allowing patients to begin and progress through strength-based rehabilitation programs more effectively. Although not a stand-alone treatment, it complements other therapies by alleviating pain, making it easier to start recovery.
Treatment Sessions
Each session lasts only a few minutes, typically spanning 4-6 sessions, scheduled one week apart. While the treatment might cause mild discomfort, it generally stays within a 3-4 range on a 10-point pain scale. Settings can be adjusted to minimize discomfort if necessary.
Contraindications
Before undergoing shockwave therapy, consider the following contraindications:
Recent cortisone (steroid) injection (within the last 6 weeks)
Clotting disorders such as haemophilia or usage of anticoagulants like Warfarin
Presence of a cardiac pacemaker
Pregnancy (consult with your physiotherapist)
Acute infection in the treatment area
Post-Treatment Care
After shockwave therapy, avoid using anti-inflammatory medications or ice packs for 48 hours. If pain relief is needed, paracetamol is permitted. Additionally, refrain from activities that aggravate the condition for 24 hours post-treatment.
